It takes many different kinds
of rock to make up this dense earth we live on.
It takes one or more minerals to make up these rocks, but they are formed
in different ways.
A mineral is not an organic substance, they are inoganic (unlike plants and
animals that are organic).
Out of roughly 4,000 minerals known to man, there are as little as a dozen
really common, but all these minerals are the basic building blocks of the
earth.
We can all see such minerals
when we place a rock under a microscope, in the majority of cases minerals
are found to have a very clear shape , and it is these shapes we refer to
as crystals, the crystals are packed together very tightly.
With some stone it is possible to see these crystals without a microscope,
such as granite (igneous) which is a very coarse material.
