RESIN REPAIRS

With the ever increasing price of quarried stone, repairing the existing stone masonry has become a cheaper option, opposed to replacing the damaged stone work.
By using a vast array of coloured and textured masonry resins and reconstituated stone mix's, it is possible to get a good match so the repair or repairs blend in to the existing masonry, because it is a mix (which is some time's called plastic repair mix), by using a build up process it is possible to successfully repair the most intricate of carved masonry.
Using non rust metals, such as copper, and brass, to reinforce the repair.
The trick to a good colour match is knowing
what the colour of the repair will be when it has fully dried out.

BBC STUDIO'S, CARDIFF.
This welsh slate plaque was damaged when a lorry delivering to the BBC studio's, reversed his vehicle into it.
When we took the slate plaque down to take it to the workshop, our suspicions were correct, the damage caused to the back was much greater than that of the front.
First off was to reinforce the damaged area, this was achieved by carefully drilling small holes, in the back of the slate around the damaged area, using brass screws and copper wire (non rust) to build a spider web type structure, this not only reinforces the repair but gives something to work to.
The next step is to make a colour match up, there are a variety of things on the market, but in this case i used a clear resin and slate dust, do a few of these mixes each time adding more dust to the same quantity of resin, it is important to wait until the samples have completly dried out, before using that exact mixture for the actual repair.
After the repaired area is fully hardened use a roughing out chisel(tooth chisel) to replicate thesurrounding area, making sure the marks left by your chisel are the same as the original, thus perfectly blending the repair, so it is un-noticable to the human eye.
The whole slab was then cleaned with a mild detergent and then polished with a masonry slate cleaner, to bring out its natural beauty, lastly the painted areas were reapplied to finish it off.
